Maquoketa Middle School
The 7th Grade culture fair will be this Friday April 4 in the cafeteria. This event will be open to both the middle school and the community starting at 2:30 and ending at 3:05. Students have prepared cultural dishes that they will be selling for 25 cents, with all money raised being used for the 7th grade field trip and the middle school world hunger day. Please join the 7th grade in our exploration of the world.
Central College Middle School Percussion Camp – Aug. 4 – 6, 2014 – This camp is for beginning percussionists interested in learning more about the world of percussion. Attendees will explore, perform, and develop their skills and techniques on mallet percussion (marimba, xylophone, vibes), concert percussion (snare drum, cymbals, tambourine, timpani, etc), world hand drums (congas, djembes), and Caribbean steel drums. Camp cost includes t-shirt, housing, meals and activities. If you are interested, see Mrs. Wold or Mr. Kahn for more details.
The performance will be on Saturday, April 5th in the West Gym at the high school at 7 PM. Judging categories include singing, dancing, duets and groups, and theatrical (stand up comedy, monologues, etc.) There will also be a limbo contest and a hula hoop contest! 8th -12th grade students and their families are invited to the Jackson County Transition Event on Tuesday, April 8 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Maquoketa High School. The focus will be to explore options after high school for individuals with IEP’s and 504 plans.
Your $15 Hunger Games Donation for your District is DUE April 7th to your District Leader. Remember, the District who raises the most money for the food packaging event on the 11th will have a better shot at winning the Real Hunger Games during 6th Hour.
Building and Designing Simple Machines: How do you build a simple machine out of LEGO® bricks? This mini-camp we will explore and test the function of different LEGO® technic components and discover how those components can work together to create all kinds of simple machines. Campers will create a Spider that crawls on 8 legs and modify our Dragster for maximum speed. Campers will explore the creative process of model design and at the completion of the camp, each camper will have the opportunity to present his or her own design idea or design enhancements to family, neighbors and friends. Come build with us.

There will be an 8th grade Graduation Dance for all Maquoketa Middle School 8th graders on Wednesday, May 28th from 5:30-7:30. The dance will be held in the Middle School cafeteria. There is no charge for the dance and snacks and drinks will be provided. Students must follow the following dress code: capri pants, dress shorts/pants, sundresses. No strapless or spaghetti straps. On April 11th the students at Maquoketa Middle School will participating in The Real Hunger Games. Throughout the day, students will be completing a real life hunger lesson through the World Food Programme, watching the documentary “A Place At The Table”, working on an assembly line to package meals for those in need through the non-profit Kids vs. Hunger, listening to Para-Olympic Gold Medalist Andy Yohe speak and competing in the Real Hunger Games competition. This day will be streamed live via the internet for parents and community members to watch and see how the students of Maquoketa Middle School are working to become global citizens and make a difference in the world.
The livestream feed will be on www.maquoketa-cardinals.com starting at 8:15am until the end of the day.
All students have been asked to raise $15 to help fund the cost of the food packaging portion of this day. Students will have until April 7th to raise their $15 and turn it into their District Leaders.
Students, staff and community members also have the opportunity to purchase a Real Hunger Games t-shirt. The cost is $10 and all checks must be made out to Power Graphics. All shirts orders must be in BY March 28th.

THIS YEAR’S 6TH GRADERS DOCUMENTATION OF THE Tdap VACCINE ON THE CERTIFICATE OF IMMUNIZATION WILL NEED TO BE PROVIDED TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL NURSE PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL NEXT YEAR OR ENROLLMENT CAN BE DENIED ACCORDING TO THE IOWA LAW.
