The title from that popular movie epitomizes how our school year has begun – fast and furious. Our commitment to our students of the Maquoketa Schools is obvious to anyone who enters our schools. As Director of Professional Growth and Student Learning, I have the pleasure of making frequent visits to our buildings to view first hand how our professional development training and our building initiatives are directly impacting student learning.

The new reading program which has begun this fall for K-6 is comprehensive, differentiated for a variety of levels, and interactive with technology embedded into instruction. It is aptly titled WONDERS because from what the teachers are reporting and from what others are observing, it is a wonderful reading program for students. Fall MAPS assessments are currently taking place in all buildings, and we will be able to measure the effect of this program with our K-6 students through Iowa Assessments in January and spring MAPS Assessments. We look forward to seeing how student achievement is impacted because fast and furious describes how we are moving into our 2013-2014 school year!
