Iowa’s Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program for Four-Year-Old Children is an important part of the state’s comprehensive early childhood effort, providing more opportunities for young children to access quality preschool and enter school ready to learn. The preschool programs are expected to serve 4-year-old children with a range of abilities representing the social, linguistic, cultural, and economic diversity of families within the community.

The Maquoketa Community School District works collaboratively with participating preschools in the community to provide a high-quality preschool program meeting each child’s needs, including children with disabilities and those from diverse backgrounds. Children are eligible for this program if they turn 4 years old on or before September 15, 2025.

Classes meet for approximately three hours each day. Children may attend either in the morning or afternoon sessions. Participating preschools follow the Maquoketa school calendar. The Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program has paid the tuition costs and transportation is provided at participating preschools for 4-year-olds who live in the Maquoketa School District.

Preschool teachers make a home visit prior to the start of school. This is an opportunity for the preschool teacher to get to know you, your child, and your family and for you to begin to create a partnership between home and school in order to best meet your child’s needs. This is a great time for you to share what makes your family unique, how you prefer to communicate with the teacher, and share your knowledge about your child’s interests, approaches to learning, and developmental needs. You can help the teacher understand what your goals are for your child and whether you have any concerns you would like addressed. Parents are encouraged to share these preferences, concerns, and questions at any time with either the classroom teacher or administrator.
