Winter Cardinal

Dear Maquoketa Families,

With winter weather upon us, I want to share how Maquoketa CSD makes decisions around weather-related school closures and how our virtual learning days work. We also want to clarify our approach to activities and athletic practices on days when school is canceled due to weather.

How Weather Decisions Are Made

Your child’s safety is our top priority. When winter weather occurs, our team begins assessing road conditions early—between 4:30–5:00 a.m. I drive district roads alongside our Transportation Director, and we consult with law enforcement, local county officials, Superintendents of neighboring school districts, and weather forecasts to make the most informed decision possible. Because conditions can vary across our district and change quickly, we strive to make announcements by 6:00 a.m. via phone, text, email, our website, Facebook, and local media outlets.

Virtual Learning Days

If school is canceled due to weather, Maquoketa will use one of the five virtual learning days approved by the state. These days allow us to maintain learning without needing to add make-up days later. Virtual learning is only used when school is canceled for the entire day, not for late starts or early dismissals.

Elementary (PK–6):

  • Learning packets were sent home during conferences. If you need a new one, please contact your child's teacher or principal.

  • Activities focus on review and enrichment with a mix of “Must Do” and “May Do” tasks from classroom and specials teachers.

  • “Must Do” assignments must be returned to count for attendance unless your child was already absent or ill.

Middle & High School (7–12):

  • Lessons will be posted on Canvas with a short instructional video or typed guidance.

  • Assignments should be submitted on Canvas or turned in the next day by 3:30 pm to be counted for attendance.

  • Teachers are available via email or Rooms, with responses by 11:30 a.m. and again by 3:00 p.m.

If your family needs help accessing the internet, please contact the Central Office at 563-652-4984. Students may complete work at the time most convenient for your household.

Practices and Activities on Snow Days

In most cases, when school is canceled due to weather, practices and extracurricular activities are also canceled. However, if weather conditions improve significantly later in the day, the Athletic Director and I may jointly approve practices. These decisions are made carefully and communicated directly to coaches and families. We ask for your patience and understanding as we balance student safety with the desire to continue learning and participation.

Thank you for your continued support and flexibility. Our goal is to keep students safe, engaged, and connected.

Warm regards,

Tara Notz

Superintendent, Maquoketa Community School District
