Looking for a fun way to explore new cultures, cook delicious food, and connect with fellow students? The Maquoketa High School Spanish Club is officially kicking off its activities for the school year, and everyone is invited to join!
We recently caught up with Spanish Club President Elizabeth Hart (Junior), who shared her journey with the club. Introduced to Spanish Club as a freshman when club sponsor Mrs. Porras visited her Spanish 1 class with Mrs. Fernandez, Elizabeth instantly fell in love with learning about Mexican culture, traveling on club trips, and cooking traditional foods. Thanks to her dedicated involvement and attendance at every event last year, Mrs. Porras appointed Elizabeth as this year's club president!
"One hope I have for the club is getting more people to join and be interested in being a part of this group!" — Elizabeth Hart
✨ What’s Happening in Spanish Club:
💀 Día de los Muertos Celebrations: Mark your calendars for October 31st, as the club has scheduled an exciting trip to Moline, Illinois, for their Día de los Muertos celebration! Plus, the team is working on finding the perfect location to set up a Día de los Muertos display right here at school.
🫔 Tamale-Making & Friendsgiving: One of the biggest highlights of the year is their annual tamale-making day around Thanksgiving.
🌮 Culinary & Cultural Experiences: Hands-on opportunities to cook, bake, and experience Mexican traditions.
✈️ Big Future Dreams: The club recently discussed options for a Summer 2028 trip and decided on the Dominican Republic—they are super excited about the possibility while plans are in the works for approval!
