Students in the Construction Technology program at the high school put their hands-on skills to work today as they constructed an equipment shed for the middle school outdoor classroom. The project was made possible thanks to elementary paraprofessional Vanessa Huffman, who applied for and secured grant funding through the Maquoketa Educational Funding Grant to purchase all necessary materials for the shed.
This project highlights just a fraction of what students can achieve through the high school’s expanding woodworking and trades curriculum. The school offers a dynamic progression of courses designed to take students from beginner projects to real-world residential construction:
Social Media Class: Students take inspiration from online trends and tutorials, challenging themselves to recreate dynamic design projects from scratch.
Intro to Building & Trades: Perfect for beginners, this course introduces foundational woodworking skills through practical, introductory projects such as custom phone docking stations, chairs, and tables.
Building in Trades & Careers: The next step for growing craftspeople, focusing on advanced concepts and complex pieces like angled planters, barstools, and nightstands.
Construction Technology 1: Geared toward comprehensive residential skills, teaching students everything it takes to build, maintain, and repair a home.
Whether you have never held a hammer or are already eager to build your own furniture, these courses offer an incredible space to unleash your creativity, gain practical life skills, and build tangible projects you can take pride in.
