NHS

The National Honor Society (NHS) was founded in 1921 by Edward Rynearson. The local MCHS chapter held its very first induction on May 11, 1957, and was named in honor of former Maquoketa resident Robert A. Millikan, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. The core mission of the National Honor Society is to recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing essential qualities of citizenship in a democracy. The four pillars—Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership—serve as the foundation of the society and are the exact criteria used by the high school selection panel to evaluate incoming members.

Membership in the National Honor Society is widely recognized as a strong indicator of a student’s potential for success both in life and in post-secondary education. Those selected have consistently demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, strong character, and a commitment to service that betters their community.

The induction ceremony began with a warm welcome from Sponsor and Advisor Mrs. Tia Frye, who is also one of our dedicated high school special education teachers. Mrs. Frye presented on the four pillars of NHS before turning the stage over to Madison Herring, who introduced the evening's guest speaker, Ryan Herring. Following the address, Madison returned to introduce the new inductees:

  • New Inductees: Breckin Current, Natalie Hackman, Jensyn Johnson, Macklyn McLaughlin, Garrett Reicks, Kelan Starr, Kenzi Wallroff, Ella Gibson, Harper Heinricy, Ivery Kluever, Lylah Meyer, Phoenix Scheper, and Arabella Wagner.

  • Current Members: Aubree Dostal, Madison Herring, Avery Schnoor, Kennedy Eggers, and Madilyn Koch.

Current member Avery Schnoor then led the entire chapter in reciting the National Honor Society Pledge:

“I pledge to uphold the high purposes of the National Honor Society to which I have been selected; I will be loyal to my school; and I will encourage high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.”

The evening concluded with inspiring closing remarks from Mrs. Frye. We extend our heartfelt gratitude and praise to Mrs. Frye for her tireless work, passion, and leadership in guiding these outstanding students. Under her mentorship, the National Honor Society continues to thrive, setting a standard of excellence and service across our school community. Congratulations to the newly inducted members of the National Honor Society on this impressive achievement!
