At Maquoketa Community School District, learning goes far beyond the pages of a textbook. Thanks to the dedication and creativity of high school Spanish teacher Mrs. Porras, students recently experienced Mexican culture firsthand through a captivating, live storytelling performance.
As part of their Spanish curriculum, high school students have been reading about La Llorona (The Weeping Woman)—one of the most famous and enduring figures in Mexican and Latin American folklore. Known in traditional stories as a ghostly entity who wanders waterways at night, La Llorona serves as a powerful cultural touchstone across generations.
To help her students connect more deeply with the narrative and language, Mrs. Porras went above and beyond by stepping into character herself. Transforming into La Llorona, she reenacted the emotional story for her classes, bringing the legend to life right inside the classroom.
The immersive experience gave students a unique opportunity to test their comprehension in real time. Following the performance, students engaged directly with the story by asking questions, discussing the character's motives, and identifying Spanish vocabulary they recognized throughout the performance.
By weaving drama, history, and language together, Mrs. Porras created a memorable cultural bridge for her students—demonstrating the extraordinary effort MCSD educators put forth every day to bring real-world learning and diverse cultural perspectives into the classroom.
