Cardinal and Briggs Elementary School students and staff spent this past week, October 26th through October 30th, celebrating Red Ribbon Week. The annual campaign aims to educate and empower students to lead healthy, drug-free lives through engaging activities and daily theme days.

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug awareness and prevention program. The initiative began in honor of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Special Agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) who tragically lost his life in 1985 while fighting illegal drug trafficking. In response to his sacrifice, communities began wearing red satin ribbons to visibly commit to drug prevention, leading to the official launch of National Red Ribbon Week in 1988. Today, it serves as an opportunity for schools and communities across the country to unite in guiding children toward positive life choices.

Throughout the week, students demonstrated their commitment to healthy living by participating in a series of themed dress-up days. The week kicked off on Monday as students wore their favorite sports jerseys to team up against drugs. On Tuesday, classrooms were filled with tie-dye and '70s-style outfits to promote peace and drug-free living. Bright colors and sunglasses made an appearance on Wednesday to show that students' futures are too bright for drugs, followed by a cozy Thursday as everyone came to school in their pajamas to highlight making safe choices for their dreams. Students wrapped up the celebration on Friday by wearing red to showcase their school spirit and shared dedication to staying drug-free. Friday also happened to be our Halloween celebration and costumes made an appearance as well! Students also learned more about healthy living habits in guidance classes with Mrs. Hildebrandt and Mrs. Steffen. Red Ribbon Week may only last seven days, but the choices our students make last a lifetime. By standing together, wearing red, and choosing a healthy path, our school community proves every day that our future isn't just drug-free—it’s limitlessly bright!
