Yesterday in 6th grade advanced mathematics we had a guest speaker, Rick Spellerberg, through zoom. Rick talked to students about the March Madness Basketball Data Analytics Competition. This competition has students create algorithms to try to figure out the top 10 teams in the tournament based on data from steals, assists, games won, rebounds, etc. The more points their algorithm creates, the greater chance of first place in the competition. Last year Maquoketa Middle Schools 8th graders took 2nd overall in the state in this competition. Mrs. Miller is looking forward to getting some 6th graders involved in creating algorithms to mathematically find champions in the March Madness tournament.
