Fire Prevention Week is always a blast in preschool! 😀❤️🔥 Students learn a lot about fire safety and have a great time while doing it. Big thanks to the Maquoketa Fire Department for letting us come check out the station and for giving us a ride back. 🚒😊

Congratulations to our Leaders of the Week! Today at Cardinal Elementary we recognized our first grade leaders along with a couple of staff shout-outs! Unfortunately we were not able to capture this on video but I will leave detailed descriptions of their hard work and model behaviors in the classroom. We are proud of you all!
Alex Pirtle is a great role model for his classmates when it comes to being proactive. He understands what it means to be in charge of your self and does an amazing job of choosing his own weather. Way to go, Alex!
In our class, Evie Hoffmann always has a plan for accomplishing her goals. She even asks every day what our learning goals are for our lesson! She shows initiative in getting started on her work so she can be done on time. Good job, Evie!
Stan Beltz is a great leader in our classroom and shows how to be proactive by being responsible even when others around him are not. Stan shows that he is ready for learning by following classroom expectations and he has a positive attitude which will help him be successful this school year.
Bailey Schulz is a great leader in our classroom and shows she can begin with the end in mind by starting her assignments right away and staying on task even when others around her are not. Bailey follows classroom expectations and she always has a positive attitude which will help her be successful this school year.
Chloe Hotler has done an amazing job showing others how to be a leader! She's one of the first to transition quietly and quickly always. She also is very helpful - assisting a friend when no one else wants to. Way to be an amazing leader and show others how to be respectful and kind, Chloe.
Fin Notz has done an awesome job of beginning with the end in mind! He's always thinking ahead and making sure to show others what to do. Way to go, Fin! Keep up the amazing work!
Maci Creger is an excellent leader in our class. She thinks ahead about how she can be responsible for herself and help others so they can also be successful in our classroom. We are so grateful to have Maci in our classroom! Great job, Maci!
Holden Sickler leads by example in our classroom. He models responsibility by always completing his work in a timely manner and always staying on task. Holden demonstrates the understanding of setting goals and planning ahead to meet his goals. Keep up the great work Holden!
Mrs. Hughes has done a great job of assisting teachers as we implement a new reading curriculum and they participate in coaching cycles. She practices habit 2 by planning ahead and scheduling times to meet with teachers as they review goals and plan action steps to help them reach their goals. She also goes above and beyond to help any friend in need as challenges arise. We are grateful to have you on our team, Mrs. Hughes!
Mrs. Graham is working hard to help students set goals for their learning and provides students with multiple opportunities to share their knowledge and skills with others by giving them opportunities to be “teachers” for their classmates. It’s a joy to see their excitement for learning.Thank you for being a great teacher, Mrs. Graham!
Mrs. Richardson's class learned how to stay safe in the case of a fire. They got to tour the fire station before the friendly firemen gave them a ride back to the school on the fire trucks! Thank you to all the firemen for sharing your skills and knowledge with us!

Welcome to another addition of the CWNK Cardinal Weekly News & Knows. Please watch this week's news report (https://youtu.be/RamqZpYfRX8) to learn more about our week ahead and all the exciting things that are happening at Cardinal Elementary. We hope you have a great week as well!

Cardinal Elementary will have 20 minute conference time slots. We encourage in-person conferences to build early school connections with families, and at times it is easier for parents to see the learning artifacts of younger students in person. However, parents can choose to have a virtual conference through Meet the Teacher if it works better for them.
Please visit https://maquoketaschools.meettheteacher.com/ to book your child’s conference appointment. You will need your students’ name(s) and birth dates. In addition, here is a short guide with step by step directions on how to book your appointment using “Meet the Teacher.”

Hello Cardinal Elementary Families,
Here is a coping skills resource from our School Counselor, Mrs. Fuerste.
When we teach coping skills to kids, it's important to fill their toolboxes with a variety of different skills.
Because, of course, what works in one situation might not be helpful in another.
Here are 5 types of coping skills to teach your student:
1️⃣ Deep Breathing - Examples: 4-7-8 breathing, belly breathing, pretending to smell a candle and then blow it out
2️⃣ Expressive Strategies - Examples: Talking to someone, writing or drawing about how you feel, prayer/meditations
3️⃣ Distraction - Examples: Walking away, finding something else to do, saying the alphabet backwards
4️⃣ Positive Self-Talk - Examples: Reminding yourself that you can make good choices, telling yourself to focus on what you can control
5️⃣ Physical Movement - Examples: Walking, stretching, yoga, pushing on something
These are just a few examples of each type, but to learn more about each type of coping skills, check out this post: https://www.counselorchelsey.com/blog/typesofcopingskills
