Cardinal Elementary celebrated our first "Lunch with the Law"! Three second grade students were selected based on their excellent character and being good role models for others as we learn the rules and expectations at Cardinal Elementary. Congratulations to Emma Smith, Riley Brewster, and Charlie Goodenow! These students then were asked to select a staff member from the building that inspires them to make good choices and be kind to others. They selected Mrs. Dostal, Miss bahlmann, and Mrs. Brown who are all 2nd grade teachers at Cardinal. We are grateful to the Maquoketa PD for providing this opportunity, along with local organizations who have contributed to funding this program. It was great to have Officer Tenny and Officer Owen escort this group to McDonald's for a yummy lunch!

Yesterday we tried lemons, made lemonade, and decorated, then ate, rainbow toast! 🍋🌈😋 It was a fun and busy day in preschool. Most friends really liked the lemons and lemonade! Only a few true “pucker” faces from the sour taste. 😄

September is Attendance Awareness Month! Every day in class matters. Showing up helps students build strong habits, connect with friends, and stay on track for success. Let's continue to work together to make attendance a priority this school year!

Please look over this flyer on 'Chronic Absenteeism' for tips and facts about how school attendance impacts children. Good attendance does take planning and preparation. If you're in need of guidance or help with resources, please reach out to your child's school building to connect with your child's teacher, principal, and/or school counselor.

We want to see all our students succeed! If we can help in any way, please reach out to your child's school building. Our school counselors have information on community resources that can help our Cardinal families.

It was a great day visiting classrooms this morning at Cardinal. Kindergarten is practicing positional words in their skills literacy lesson and 1st grade was learning some new vocabulary. Our teachers and students were rocking it on day 6 of school!! Way to go Cardinals!

We are excited for our first home football game this Friday, August 29th vs. Anamosa. Please review our Activities Expectations. Students 5th grade and younger are expected to sit with their family members (5th grade will continue to sit with their family even though they are in Middle School). In addition, once students enter they need to remain in Goodenow. Students will not be able to reenter the event if they leave, unless the are with an adult.

Thank You for your support as we work to make this a fun and safe event for everyone!

Tomorrow is the first day of school and we are so excited to welcome back all students, staff and families for the new school year! Tomorrow, Monday, August 25th is an early out. Please review the following times for your specific building:

Cardinal: 1:10 pm dismissal
Briggs: 1:10 pm dismissal
Middle School: 1:20 pm (walkers/car riders), 1:25 (bus riders)
High School: 1:30

These times will be the same times that apply to all Friday early outs also. A gentle reminder, to please be patient and give grace to staff, bus drivers and families as navigating pick-up and drop-off can always be a little challenging these first few days. Specifically, if you have a student at Briggs, Middle School or riding the Cardinal/Briggs shuttle please review the information that was provided regarding pick-up and drop-off locations.

Thank You,

Superintendent Notz

Thank you so much to our local businesses and organizations who donated and supported our district wide back to school staff luncheon on Friday. We appreciate the support of our staff as we kick off the new year! Thank You to the following: Fareway Dollar Fresh Eagles Club Women's Club Board Member Mary Herring for helping serve staff. Staff and parent volunteers for helping grill the delicious burgers and hotdogs. It was a beautiful day and great way to connect with everyone before students arrive. Here's to a great year!
