Hello Cardinal Elementary Families, Welcome to another week at Cardinal Elementary! We are excited to enter the month of October! Hello Cardinal Elementary Families, Here is a coping skills resource from our School Counselor, Mrs. Fuerste. When we teach coping skills to kids, it's important to fill their toolboxes with a variety of different skills. Because, of course, what works in one situation might not be helpful in another. Here are 5 types of coping skills to teach your student: 1️⃣ Deep Breathing - Examples: 4-7-8 breathing, belly breathing, pretending to smell a candle and then blow it out 2️⃣ Expressive Strategies - Examples: Talking to someone, writing or drawing about how you feel, prayer/meditations 3️⃣ Distraction - Examples: Walking away, finding something else to do, saying the alphabet backwards 4️⃣ Positive Self-Talk - Examples: Reminding yourself that you can make good choices, telling yourself to focus on what you can control 5️⃣ Physical Movement - Examples: Walking, stretching, yoga, pushing on something These are just a few examples of each type, but to learn more about each type of coping skills, check out this post: https://www.counselorchelsey.com/blog/typesofcopingskills Taylor Fuerste, MA School Counselor Cardinal Elementary School (563) 652-4984 ext. 1231 tfuerste@maquoketaschools.org

Today at Cardinal Elementary we reviewed our Habit 1: Be Proactive focus during the All-School Assembly by awarding those students with High Hopes and Count On Me Awards. High Hopes go out to those students and staff who are working hard on their academic work and persevere when things get tough or they make mistakes. Count on Me Awards go to those students that you can always count on to be a good friend, be a good leader, and follow the expectations. Congratulations to all of our award winners! Highlights include: * Fall begins on Monday - Make sure students are prepaed for colder temperatures at recess. * Wednesday we will announce High Hopes and Count On Me Awards for our Leadership Assembly. * Friday we will all head to the Ohnward center for a performance from the Fly Guy dancers. We will leave around 9:40 a.m. and return around 11:20. a.m Have a great week.

✨ What an unforgettable spirit day during Homecoming week at Cardinal Elementary! Our PS-K students had a fantastic time watching the parade in the bright sunshine! 🌞 Thank you to all the families who joined us for the fun and festivities! Mr. Shipper has done a fantastic job of sharing the importance of good sportsmanship as all PE students review these learning targets and practice through game play. Students set goals and are recognized for accomplishing these goals! Way to be a supportive team, Cardinals!

Cardinal students and staff had a fun day celebrating the kick-off to homecoming week with "Dress Like Your Favorite Book/Movie Character Day". Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings as we "Rhyme Without Reason!" Go Cardinals!

For the parade we do take the buses down to main street and watch in front of MSB bank. Cardinal Elementary Families, Check out these fun options for breakfast next week at Cardinal Elementary!

Hello Cardinal Elementary Families, Many of you have reached out to our staff regarding the "Rhyme Without Reason" dress-up day for next Tuesday during homecoming week. The idea for this day is that students/staff find a friend or group of friends that they can partner with to make two words that rhyme but don't make sense together. An example might be moon & spoon or bat & cat. While we see the fun this could be for older students we realize that it can be hard to coordinate for students our age. As an alternative you could plan out more of a mismatched outfit. Kinda like dressing without a rhyme or reason as to why the outfit was put together. Like a suit jacket top with sweatpants bottoms. Or a sports jersey with PJ pants. Can't wait to see all the fun outfits! Sara Bennis Cardinal Elementary Principal

It was an exciting battle at Cardinal Elementary as we challenged everyone to support their favorite team for the upcoming Iowa Vs. Iowa State game this Saturday. As you can see by the smiling faces, it was a win-win for all. Everyone enjoyed the friendly banter as we supported Iowa Sports. Regardless of the outcome of the game, we had fun!
